I’m going out tonight and there will be dancing! What better opportunity to test my personal theories on what makeup and fragrance will put me in touch with my inner ABBA? Â
Today’s post is therefore not quite what I’d planned to share with you. It’s a little collection of snapshots, pulled together in a big hurry that will give you all more opportunities to admire my beautiful ABBA mug! This was the most fantastic surprise Christmas gift from the wonderful artist Marc McGreevy, whose beautiful illustrations were so inspiring that they turned my initial idea of an ABBA post into an ABBA Week!
When I want to feel like Agnetha …
Agnetha is the Queen of sky-blue eye shadow (the Empress of navy blue eyeshadow is of course, British newsreader Moira Stewart) and my lovely Marc McGreevy mug is obligingly holding all my blue mascaras, eye sticks, and liners should I decide to wear Agnetha eyes this evening.
In the seventies and eighties, it was not customary for bands to form relationships with fashion and beauty brands as a routine step on the path to chart domination. This means that happily, I have no idea what particular perfumes and products the members of ABBA favoured, and so am free to just imagine what they might have liked.Â
I think Agnetha might have liked the simplicity and freshness of L’Air Du Temps. The bottle and body lotion combo above was a present from EOTB’s Margot, and I intend to wax lyrical about it in the future, so will say no more for now, other than that it manages (to my nose) to be clean, crisp and soft, all at the same time. Like a perfectly comfortable white shirt, well worn but still pristine, soft against the skin but with a starchy popped collar.Â
When I want to feel like Anni-Frid …
I would go for a darker fragrance, like Femme or Opium. Both have the warmth that I associate with Anni-Frid. I’m not talking about the cosy warmth of hot chocolate and gingerbread biscuits, but something far more playful and exciting. Imagine a cat that’s been toasting herself in front of the fire all day, and is now ready to go out on the prowl – that’s the kind of warmth I think these two perfume classics convey!
Marc’s gorgeous mug is filled up with a selection of warm neutrals, a pot of Maybelline mousse highlighter, and a Bourjois eye-pencil (that you can’t see) that is on its last legs, but that I’d love to be able to replace when it is finally worn to a stump. It’s black at one end, a shimmery cream at the other and very good for creating a gorgeous ‘if Rudolf Nureyev mated with a fox and had a daughter, that daughter would be Anni-Frid Lyngstad’ look.
And now I must awa’, for I am late for my evening engagements! I have perfume on, but no make-up, I’m sort of dressed, but not really, and I wrapped my hair up in a microfibre towel some hours ago and forgot about it – which means it will be standing up on end in an alarming way.Â
None of that matters a bit though, because I smell like I imagine ABBA smell, and I’m gonna have fun 🙂
Tomorrow we will have a really good look at Marc’s portraits and a more considered take on the beauty and fashion of ABBA.
For now, I leave you with a tiny Benny, posed against three of my favourite scents.Â
A demain!Â
