Do You Remember Your First JEANS?

Do you remember your first pair of jeans?

These are the first pair of jeans that I can remember wearing. I think I’m about three in the picture above.

The jeans and jacket were made of  soft corduroy, and I think they were Wranglers. I remember that they were a soft, tea-rose pink, very muted and chic, but memory can be deceptive. My memory insists that the polo neck jumper I’m wearing with my little cord trouser suit was a kind of ginger colour, so maybe the cord was more peach-toned ..?

I’m certain that the little suede shoes were dark red. I can remember the feel of the fabrics with far more intensity than I can recall the colours.

I loved this outfit with an absolute passion.

I loved my roller skates too – they were adjustable, and I think they had a little dog imprinted in the plastic underneath. But I loved my roller skates to look at from a safe distance, not to wear.

I am styling it out in this picture. I am merely balanced on my skates: reluctantly; precariously, and that little hand is  outstretched in supplication to my adult, imploring them not to leave me standing all alone, and wobbling. I was a very risk-adverse child. A proper little chicken. I preferred my corduroys un-torn, un-scuffed, and if learning to skate meant going flat on my pre-school arse on those concrete slabs  – then over my dead body would I learn to skate. 

And I didn’t! But I adored my skates as a posing aid and a plaything (just not as dangerous skates), and I remember feeling as grown-up and composed in my little corduroy jeans and jacket as any of my glamorous elders.
