Leather Forever, the Hermès exhibition, is worth at least two visits. We went yesterday and marvelled at the room of skin and hides. Calfskins are almost as big as double-decker buses. Very fatted calves. And exotic reptiles have tender inner thighs, and a neat little buttonhole for excretory purposes.
But the room of skin and hides, serial-killeresque as it is, is not the only room of wonder. Beyond lies glorious stuff. Photography is forbidden, sadly, and there is no show catalogue, so you MUST attend in person and imprint these delights upon your memory.
When it’s all over we can reconvene, and have a good chat about what we coveted most, and which objectionable object scooped the prize for vulgarity.
Hurry along to 6 Burlington Gardens, W1. You haven’t got all day you know: it closes at 6pm sharp (except on Fridays, which are traditionally pick-up nights in the world of art and culture). And it will all be gone FOREVER by May 27th. No need to book and it is wonderfully, benevolently, Hermès-ily FREE.
