Mary Greenwell and Get The Gloss at the Chanel Beauty Boutique

Mary Greenwell in action at Get The Gloss event, Chanel Beauty BoutiqueOn Thursday evening, the online beauty and health magazine Get The Gloss hosted a reader event at the Chanel Beauty Boutique in Covent Garden. Two hours watching make-up artist of international renown Mary Greenwell demonstrate iconic Chanel products? For a mere £25, redeemable against purchases? I wasted no time in booking my place …

It is wonderful to watch Mary Greenwell at work; so sure and confident, and able to create beautiful effects on the face that are wonderfully subtle. As Mary made up her model from bare skin to a finished, polished look, she introduced us to the Chanel products that she believes to be truly invaluable, and although I’d arrived telling myself that I only wanted a lipstick, and needed nothing more, my wish-list is now a long one …

This was an evening so full of useful information, inspiration, and general delight that to describe it in its entirety is impossible! But here are my top 5 take-aways from the evening:

1. Buy and USE a Factor 50 sunscreen. I can feel good about this one, as I’ve invested in Bioderma and Avéne Factor 50 sunscreens and I am remembering to use them every day – even when it’s overcast.

2. Mary believes that everyone – ‘even four-year-olds’ – look better with concealer. Mary’s model, as you can see from the photos, is absolutely stunning, but the concealer that Mary applied did give a lift and enhanced the look. I hardly ever use concealer, but I’m going to practice and try to add it to my 5-minutes-and-out-the-door routine – even if it means it takes a few more minutes to get out the door!

3. Nude lipstick is best left to the under 25s. Mary feels that after this, everyone benefits from more colour on the mouth. I’ve been struggling with this for a long time now. Having lived in nudes (and reds) all my life, it’s hard to step away from the ‘I’m so sexy I’m not even trying’/’Sexy, me? With my girlish, natural lip?’ side of my lipstick wardrobe, and yet, I’ve known that they don’t flatter as they once did. I agree with Mary, and it came as a relief to hear her say it. There and then, I said my farewells to the Chanel Cécile lip colour that I’d been considering. I think Chanel Mademoiselle and other rosy naturals are as nude as I can go these days.

CHANEL 446 Etienne4. Choose between lipstick colours of seemingly equal appeal through a process of elimination. This tip from Mary was worth the price of admission alone! This is how you do it: smear a little of each colour onto a fingertip. Hold out your hand and regard your fingertips with your beadiest gaze. Identify the least appealing and remove with a tissue. Keep at it, and then you’ll find The One!

Simplicity itself, and yet, on my first attempt, I needed Mary’s expert guidance. I am so greedy that I had five fingertips full, and no clue which I could manage without. Mary counselled removing any that were too like lipsticks I already owned, and that took out two; then we got rid of the red that contained the most orange. Still in contention: a beautiful true red, and a red so dark that it was almost purple. I wavered … that true red was beautiful, and the darker one had seemed quite intimidating in the bullet …

‘Intimidating’ … when have I ever shied away from intimidating? On the contrary, many of my closest and longest relationships began because I’m drawn to those who put me on my mettle! And with that thought, I realised that I had found The One. And so (as on so many evenings) I left the house with my heart set on Dimitri … and ended up coming home with Etienne. With lipstick, as with love, it’s always good to be open to seduction from sources unexpected …

5. The fifth take-away from the evening? It has to be the goody-bag (pictured below)! Not least because it includes a sample of Chanel Hydra Beauty Micro Serum, which Mary had demonstrated earlier in the evening. This blue gel is suitable for all skin types and promises to be the perfect secret weapon in anyone’s campaign for beautiful, natural looking skin. It’s no.1 on my long Chanel wish-list and I’m very excited to try it.
